Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior representative commented the vandalism made him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
