The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Animated Journey with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Romance
Throughout this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on collecting baby teeth of slumbering children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the ugly creature he expected.
An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are actually intelligent and technologically advanced.
Naturally, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
You won’t find all that many children’s animations aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not old enough for the content teenagers are watching in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
